Training

March 3rd, 2026

Training your dog in 2026 is not about showing them who is the boss or doing the thing over and over. We are past the time when people thought they had to be in charge of their dogs. Now we know that dogs do better when we work with them and help them feel happy and safe.

If you want your dog to listen to you even when they see a squirrel you have to do things. Here is how people are training their dogs now.

The idea that you have to be the "alpha" dog is not true. This is something that people used to believe. It is not what scientists think now. Dogs are not trying to take over your house they are just confused or bored.

At Porters Canine Shop they train dogs using reinforcement. This means they give the dog a treat when they do something. It is not about giving the dog a treat when they are barking. It is about teaching the dog to do what you want them to do so they will do it again. When a dog learns that sitting quietly gets them a treat but jumping up does not they will sit quietly. Dogs like to get things they want so we can use that to help them learn.

There are also tools that can help with training. Some collars have technology that can help your dog learn to listen to you when they are not on a leash. These collars can even tell you when your dog is getting anxious so you can help them feel better.

One of the things people are doing now is called Cooperative Care. This is when you teach your dog to let you take care of them like clipping their nails or going to the vet. You do this by giving them a choice so they feel like they are in control. Of holding them down you teach them to put their chin on a special rest or play a game. If they move away you stop what you are doing. This helps build trust with your dog so they do not feel scared or want to bite.

Most people spend a lot of time teaching their dog to stay. They forget to teach them to focus. In a world with a lot of things going on it is really important for your dog to be able to pay attention to you.

If you are in a park, with your dog try giving them a treat every time they look at you. This helps them learn to focus on you even when there are a lot of things around.

It is also important to make sure your dog is not just doing what you say because they are scared. You want them to do things because they want to work with you.

Another thing that is helpful is giving your dog things to do that challenge their mind. If your dog is destroying things it might not be because they need exercise it might be because they need something to think about. You can use toys and games to help them use their brain and nose.

The important thing is to be consistent. You do not need to spend a lot of time training your dog, a few minutes a day. Dogs like to know what to expect. If you are consistent they will learn faster.

You do not need a trainer to help you you can just take a few minutes a day to work with your dog. Remember to end your training sessions when your dog is doing something good so they feel happy and want to keep learning.
